PDP protest against land laws foiled, office sealed, leaders detained

Authorities on Thursday sealed Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) office and detained several of its leaders as they tried to take to streets to protest against Government of India's (GoI) new land laws for Jammu and Kashmir.

The PDP leaders who were arrested were former Member of Legislative Council (MLC) Khursheed Alam, spokesperson Suhail Bukhari, youth president Waheed Para among others.

PDP president Mehbooba Mufti also tried to reach the PDP office but was stopped by the police mid-way and was asked to return to her residence.

PDP had organized a protest rally from the party headquarters in Srinagar to the Press Enclave. However, the police already deployed there detained the leaders and sealed the office.

Taking to micro-blogging site Twitter, Mehbooba Mufti said the party office in Srinagar has been sealed by the administration and workers have been arrested for organizing a peaceful protest.

“PDP office in Srinagar sealed by J&K admin & workers arrested for organizing a peaceful protest. A similar protest was allowed in Jammu so why was it thwarted here? Is this your definition of ‘normalcy’ that's being showcased in the world?” Mehbooba tweeted.

Later addressing the media at her Gupkar residence, Mufti said that her party  would continue to fight on all fronts  and won’t tolerate attempts to change the demography of Jammu and Kashmir.

Mehbooba accused the GoI of resorting to “open loot of J&K” by making announcements like repealing of land laws, introducing domicile law and terminating any government employee after  22 years of service.

Mehbooba said that she is not a “Twitter politician” who apart from tweeting all-day do nothing practical to oppose the GoI’s latest decisions.

“Today, you stopped us but we won't keep quiet and allow BJP an open loot of J&K resources,” she said.

Pitching for a united fight against “GoI’s anti-J&K policy,” Mehbooba said that she is glad that people of Jammu and Ladakh have also recognised the “evil face” of the BJP.

Mehbooba said that in Bihar polls, instead of providing job, food and shelter to people, BJP is selling abrogation of Article 370 to people.

“Today people in Bihar are seeking employment, food but BJP is telling them to buy land in J&K,” she said. “They have destroyed this country.”

Terming  J&K a “big jail”, Mehbooba said GoI rather showing its machismo to its own people in Kashmir by curbing the dissent, should show the same strength in fighting China who killed 20 Indian soldiers in Ladakh and occupied some of its territory.
