Srinagar, March 12: The evacuation process for Indian medical students stranded in Iran has begun in phases, with the first groups of students leaving for the borders today.
Students from SBUMS, TUMS, and IUMS, who were earlier relocated to Qom, formed the first batch and left today by buses towards the Armenia border.
Meanwhile, students from Urmia University have also started their journey today and are heading towards Armenia as part of the evacuation plan.
From Shiraz University, where 86 Indian medical students are studying, 48 students have departed towards Azerbaijan via Qom. These students will stay in Qom for a few days before proceeding to the Azerbaijan border. The Embassy of India in Iran is coordinating the evacuation and planning to move students through both Armenia and Azerbaijan routes.
On 11 March, many students received distressing messages stating that their flights from Armenia had been cancelled, creating panic among those preparing to leave.
However, Dr. Mohammad Momin Khan confirmed at 1:30 AM on 12 March that the flights are again on schedule. At present, only the flights scheduled for 17 March are still showing as cancelled, which continues to cause concern among some students.
Dr. Khan has been in constant touch with the stranded students and has assured them of full support. He is also expected to receive the returning students at Indira Gandhi International Airport.
According to the latest update, most students are expected to land at Indira Gandhi International Airport on 15 March, while a few students are expected to arrive on 14 March at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport.
